Kerala, July 7: A class 5 girl student was expelled from her madrasa because she was seen sporting a ‘sandalwood bindi’ on her forehead as part of an acting assignment in a short film. The madrasa expelled the student after some fringe elements made an issue out of it. The incident came to light after the girl’s father, Ummar Malayil took to Facebook to narrate the entire thing and how the action taken was unjustified. The social media post which went viral within a day with 7,700 likes and 2,500 shares talked about how the girl was extremely competent. Malayil wrote that his 10-year-old was good in her studies as well as in extracurricular activities which included singing and dancing. She had won many prizes in school and madrasa-level competitions. “Despite her impeccable talents, she was expelled from the madrasa. The reason cited is shocking: she sported a sandal bindi,” read Malayil’s post. He further added a sarcastic remark stating that he was relieved that the so called fringe elements has spared her daughter stone-pelting punishment. The post which was written in Malyalam got instant attention of the people with some coming forward to applause Malayil’s action and some criticising him and supporting the madrasa stating that sporting a ‘bindi’ was indeed un-Islamic and against the Sharia laws.
