Nipah Virus: Kerala Imposes Restrictions in Containment Zones in Several Wards | Check Guidelines

Nipah Virus in Kerala: As part of the restrictions, offices, banks, schools, anganwadis in the containment zones will not function. However, essential services will be allowed.

Nipah Virus: As per the restrictions imposed by the state government, those in the containment zones will not be allowed to go out, neither will any outsider be allowed to enter these zones.

Nipah Virus Latest Update: The Kerala government on Wednesday imposed restrictions in containment zones after the state Health Department issued an alert for Kannur, Wayanad and Malappuram districts after Nipah virus infection was confirmed in Kozhikode. After two deaths due to Nipah virus were reported in the state, the Kerala government declared several wards in seven panchayats as containment zones. However, the state government urged people not to panic.

Taking to Facebook, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said, “Nipah virus infection has been confirmed in Kozhikode district. Two people died due to infections. Of the four people whose saliva was sent for testing, two were Nipah positive and two were Nipah negative.”

In the wake of the Nipah virus outbreak, Kozhikode district collector declared the following Grama Panchayat wards as containment zones under section (4) of the Kerala Epidemic Decease Control Ordinance 2020.

List of Containment Zones in Kerala 

• Aayanchery Gramapanchayat – 1,2,3,4,5,12,13,1 and 15 wards
• Maruthonkara Gramapanchayat – 1,2,3,4,5,12,13 and 14 wards·
• Thiruvallur Gramapanchayat – 1,2 and 20·
• Kuttiyadi Gramapanchayat – 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 wards·
• Kayakkodi Gramapanchayat – 5,6,7,8,9,10 wards·
• Villiapalli Gramapanchayat – 6 and 7 wards·
• Kavilumpara Gramapanchayat – 2,10,11,12,13,14,15 and 16

List Of Restrictions Imposed In Containment Zones

• As per the restrictions imposed by the state government, those in the containment zones will not be allowed to go out, neither will any outsider be allowed to enter these zones.
• Police and local authorities have been asked to ensure that there is proper and strict barricading in the containment zones.
• Shops and outlets selling essential commodities like food are allowed to open from 7 AM to 5 PM.
• There will be no time restriction for medical shops and other health centres.
• Offices, banks, schools, anganwadis in these containment zones will not function.
• Social distancing, use of mask and sanitisers must be used by people in these containment zones.

In the meantime, the Kerala chief minister on Tuesday urged people to not panic and to take precaution instead. “Everyone should strictly follow the instructions of the health department and the police and fully cooperate with the restrictions,” CM Vijayan said.

On Tuesday, the Central government rushed a team of health experts to Kerala as Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya confirmed that the two “unnatural deaths” in the state were due to the Nipah virus. The first death took place on August 30 and the second death on September 11.

“I have spoken to the Health Minister of Kerala, there have been reports of this virus several times this season. Cases are coming up, this virus is spread by bats. A guideline has been prepared by the Health Ministry regarding this so that we can take precautions,” Mandaviya said.

Earlier in Kerala there was a Nipah virus outbreak in the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts in 2018 and later in 2021, a case of Nipah virus was reported in Kozhikode.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Nipah Virus is caused by fruit bats and is potentially fatal to humans as well as animals. Along with respiratory illness, it is also known to cause fever, muscular pain, headache, fever, dizziness, and nausea.
