Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday rejected bail plea of former Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal, who has been accused of rape by a Kerala nun. The accused was sent to two weeks judicial custody till October 6, after being produced before a magistrate court in Pala. He would be lodged at a sub-jail in Kottayam district unless the high court gives him bail.
Franco Mulakkal, the Bishop of Mulakkal, is facing allegations of raping a Kerala-based nun repeatedly between 2014 and 2016. However, the clergyman denies the charges of sexual misconduct. He was arrested on September 21 in Tripunithura after three days of questioning.
On September 23, he was taken to the Kuravilangadu Convent, the alleged crime scene, as a part of the evidence-collection process.
Meanwhile, sister of the Kerala nun, who had accused Jalandhar Bishop Franco Mulakkal of raping her, has alleged that the accused’s aides have been making life threats to her family. Sister of the Kerala nun had filed a petition to the state DGP, Kottayam SP and Kalady circle inspector demanding protection to their lives and property. In the complaint, the nun’s sister said that brothers of Franco Mulakkal have been filing fake complaints against her. She also alleged being threatened by Thomas Chittuparamban, a relative of Mulakkal.
Meanwhile, the nun who had participated in the protest against rape accused Franco Mulakkal and was restrained from performing her duties at the Church was later allowed to do resume her services following a backlash which the vicar received from members of his own community.
