Thiruvananthapuram, July 4: The Kerala Students Union (KSU) has called for a state-wide education bandh today following the lathi charge on its workers who had taken out a march to secretariat yesterday. The bandh comes against the backdrop of the KSU workers demanding a decrease in the college fees charged by the Pariyaram Medical College, appointment of vice chancellor and pro-vice chancellor at the University of Kerala without further delay and a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Jesna Maria James missing case.
A march by KSU raising voice against the same issues was carried out yesterday which left 10 activists and four policemen injured. Meanwhile, opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president MM Hassan have condemned the police lathi charge. Ramesh Chennithala said the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government is trying to suppress the agitations launched by the opposition using police force.

All the people injured were rushed to the Government Medical College where All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and former chief minister Oommen Chandy visited the KSU leaders admitted to the medical college hospital.
Meanwhile, the cantonment police have arrested five activists. Those who have been apprehended and remanded in judicial custody were Rinku Padippurayil, Abdul Rasheed, Suhail Ansar, Shuhail Shajahan and K. Kishore.
