Lucknow, July 26: Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya may quit his post in the state government, sources told India.com. BJP leader Keshav Prasad Maurya reportedly left for Delhi on Tuesday evening and may offer resignation on the eve of July 27 after returning from the capital. Maurya, who also represents the Phulpur constituency in the Lok Sabha, was supposed to tender his resignation within six months after he assumed the office of Deputy Chief Minister in March.
However, as sources indicate, amidst the rumours of Mayawati contesting from Phulpur, Maurya may quit his post to stop her from contesting by-elections. As per Sources, Bharatiya Janta Party does not want Mayawati to get elected for Lok Sabha. He may be given a post in Cabinet in the centre. Although Maurya defeated his nearest rival in 2014 Lok Sabha elections with a margin of more than 3 Lakh votes, the seat is considered safe for Bahujan Samaj Party too. It was represented by Kapil Muni Karwariya in 2009 in the lower house of the parliament from BSP.[Read: Rajya Sabha Chairman Accepts Mayawati’s Resignation After She Submits One-Line Note]
The election may further strengthen her claim over the Dalit Voter base who recently distanced itself from the party after Saharanpur riots.
Earlier this month, Mayawati resigned from the Rajya Sabha after she alleged the government led by Bharatiya Janta Party of stopping her from raising issues of Dalits in Parliament.
The move was seen as an attempt by Mayawati to consolidate her core Dalit support base and re-establish herself as the community’s preeminent leader after facing a massive defeat in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections earlier this year. Her party could win only 18 seats while the BJP came to power by winning more than 300 of the 403 seats.
