The massive protest turned violent at the border on Tuesday, with police using water cannons and tear gas to disperse them. The farmers then tried to forcibly break barricades and defy prohibitory orders. The clash left many farmers injured, Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Kumar Singh said, adding they hadn’t taken permission to hold a protest.

As the rally of thousands of farmers, under the banner of Bharatiya Kisan Union to demand a complete loan waiver, approached the UP-Delhi border, the Delhi Police stopped it and imposed section 144 in the east and northeast Delhi. Miffed by the imposition of Section 144, the angry farmers asked why they were stopped when they were “proceeding in a disciplined manner”.

“Why have we been stopped here (at UP-Delhi border)? The rally was proceeding in a disciplined manner. If we don’t tell our government about our problems then whom do we tell? Do we go to Pakistan or Bangladesh?” Naresh Tikait, President of Bharatiya Kisan Union asked.
