Kolkata, Mar 8: A BTech student has been sentenced to five years in jail for uploading objectionable pictures and videos of a girl he met on social media. The court has also slapped a fine of Rs 9000 on him. Third judicial magistrate Gautam Kumar Nag directed the state to pay compensation considering the woman a rape survivor. The woman had lodged a complaint against one Animesh Boxi for threatening to upload the pictures and videos if she refuses to have a physical relationship with him. Boxi was arrested July 21, 2017. “The girl complained she knew Boxi for three years and trusted him. With a promise to marry her, Boxi obtained some private photographs and videos from her. He threatened to upload them if she didn’t have physical relations with him. When she refused, he uploaded the photographs,” said Advocate Bivas Chatterjee. He told the court that this was a case of revenge pornography. “…the girl underwent virtual rape every time somebody clicked on one of her photographs,” he added.
According to a TOI report, this is the first such case in West Bengal.
