New Delhi: A girl student was found lying in a pool of blood inside her Kolkata school washroom with her wrist slashed and a plastic bag over her head on Thursday.

The student was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead.

The forensics team has reached the school premises while the police suspect this to be a case of suicide.

The police are also set to examine the CCTV footage of the school corridor in addition to questioning the teachers and staff.

WHAT WE KNOW SO FAR

Speaking to her friends revealed that she (victim) was searched for after she left her class around 1:30 pm and did not return for long. On further inquiry, she was found in the bathroom.

“We are deeply shocked. She was a topper and a very bright student. We saw her in the morning, she seemed fine. We do not know how this happened as our school is alert at all times. A help (maasi) is always there inside the toilet, wonder why she didn’t notice when she kept herself locked inside for so long,” said her classmate.

According to the police, a blade, a plastic, and a three-page handwritten suicide note were found on her. Police have sent the suicide note to a handwriting expert to ascertain whether it is her handwriting or not.

“The note read that she was preparing to get through the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI)… It said that she couldn’t sleep for three months,” said Joint Commissioner of Kolkata Police, Murlidhar Sharma. He further added, “An autopsy will be conducted tomorrow. CCTV footage has been collected. We are examining statements from other students and teachers.”

A case has been registered at the Jadavpur police station under which the school falls.
