Kolkata, May 5: A post-graduate woman from Kolkata’s Jadavpur University was allegedly harassed by a middle-aged on Thursday for smoking with her friends in a public space. The victim filed a complaint with Netaji Nagar Police Station.
She told the police that she, along with her friends, was smoking while waiting for an auto-rickshaw at 10 pm on Thursday. The man, who was later identified as Raju Saha, approached them and told them that they should be ashamed of themselves for being girls and smoking in the open. “We didn’t pay attention to him and boarded the auto. He also boarded the auto and started hurling filthy abusive words at us and at the same time started touching my private parts. When the auto approached the police station, he even slapped me and tried to escape but I caught hold of him and handed him over to the cops,” the complaint read, according to a DNA report.
Police took an immediate action and arrested Saha. The victim told media organizations that the man even asked for a drag of her cigarette which she refused. She did not mention this in her police complaint.
In an earlier incident on April 30, a man and his woman friend were beaten up for “standing too close” and hugging each other at the Dum Dum metro station. An elderly man protested at their behaviour and started bashing up the man. In trying to rescue him, the young woman also got injured. A video that recorded the assault went viral as did photos capturing the incident. Metro Rail Kolkata issued a statement strongly objecting to the episode, reported DNA. It said, ” Dear commuters, we are trying to enquire into an incident which has allegedly taken place y’day at Dumdum Metro stn. No complaint has been lodged by anyone as yet. However, we are trying to get to the bottom of it……. But we would like to make one thing very clear… that Metro Rly IS AGAINST MORAL POLICING “.
