Kolkata: A man belonging to Bardhaman set seven houses on fire in Bhatar as a part of his ‘hobby’, a report claimed. Not only this, he was also the first one to reach out for water after setting the houses ablaze. He has been arrested in connection with the crime.
The accused, identified as 22-year-old Arindam Bhattacharya, is a farmer by profession and has confessed to the crime. He has claimed that he developed this ‘hobby’ after people started blaming him for all fire related incidents in the village even when he had no role to play in them. As per a report, he has also tried to set his own house on fire once.
The crime came to light on August 29 when the cowshed of one Uttam Dey, a resident of Sahebgaunj, caught fire. The police caught hold of Arindam on the basis of the statements recorded by the villagers. He confessed to the crime.
A psychiatrist Sujata Das has been quoted as saying in a report that such actions usually come out of revenge or he may have tried to gain attention by committing such an act.
