Kolkata: A garment-seller was arrested by the Barasat Police for selling off his one-month-old twin daughters Sunday. The man identified as Ratan Brahma sold one of his daughters for Rs 1 lakh to a rice-trader and his other daughter for a total of Rs 80,000 to a childless couple on October 26.

A resident of Gaighata area, Brahma during interrogation revealed that he already had a daughter and would’ve been unable to fend for two more, hence he sold off his newborns.

According to the police, Brahma said that he and his wife already had a daughter. An official said, “During interrogation, Brahma revealed that he sold his daughters so they could get a better life as he could not afford to raise three daughters.”

As per reports, the police rescued one of the twins from the rice trader’s house at Thakurnagar area and the second child was recovered from the childless couple’s house at Ramchandrapur village. Police said the twins have been kept at a Chandpara health centre and would be produced before the child welfare committee.

The man has been booked under relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act 2015. Meanwhile, police officials are also questioning the two persons who bought the twins.
