Kolkata, Oct 10: An outbreak of a new virus called human metapneumo or hMPV has led to fever, body ache and respiratory issues to over hundred people in Kolkata. The virus is activated by a sudden drop in temperature and it spreads through cough and sneeze droplets.

What is Human metapneumovirus (hMPV)?

  1. hMPV is a single negative-stranded RNA-enveloped virus.
  2. It is classified in the Paramyxoviridae family; subfamily Pneumovirinae.
  3. People with respiratory or lungs or breathing issues such as asthma, COPD, emphysema are more prone to get infected by the virus.
  4. The symptoms of this hMPV are high fever, body ache, respiratory issues and fatigue.
  5. There is no vaccine or treatment available for cure Human metapneumovirus.

Debashish Saha, consultant, AMRI Hospital told Times of India that people are scared and a lot of them are heading to get a blood test done. He added, “It’s good to be careful, but the treatment of viral diseases should be different from that of dengue”.
