Kolkata Rape-Murder Case: The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) Thursday shared a video of parents of the RG Kar hospital rape and murder case victim in which they refuted the “baseless rumors” of being offered money by the Kolkata Police in lieu of their silence. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, the Mamata Banerjee-led party also accused the opposition of using the RG Kar tragedy for their political gain by spreading “shameless propaganda”.
The TMC’s counter comes amid a new swerve in the Kolkata rape and murder case wherein the parents of the slain trainee doctor allegedly claimed to have been offered money by a senior officer of the Kolkata Police in their attempt to “hush up” the case.
Refuting the bribery allegations, Trinamool released a video of the victim’s parents saying that they never mentioned anything about any attempts being made by the police to bribe them.
Terming the bribery claims as “baseless rumors”, the doctor’s father is heard saying in the video, “We never said anything about any attempts by police officials to bribe. These are blatant lies. I urge everyone not to spread such rumors and instead ensure my daughter gets the justice she deserves.”
The purported video was shot last month, according to a report by India Today, while the bribery allegations came on Wednesday night when the doctor’s parents joined the protests to support the junior doctors fighting for justice for their daughter.
Speaking to the media at the RG Kar hospital on Wednesday, the doctor’s family alleged that the Kolkata Police tried to hush up the case and a senior police officer even tried to offer them money in exchange for their silence, according to a PTI report.
The victim’s parents, who joined protesting doctors at the RG Kar hospital on Wednesday, claimed that the Kolkata Police hurriedly cremated their daughter’s body in an attempt to suppress the case. The aggrieved parents also accused a senior police officer of trying to bribe them after the incident came to light, the PTI report said.
“The police, from the very beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examination. Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined,” PTI quoted the victim’s father as saying.
The TMC refuted the bribery allegations and accused the BJP and the media of “spreading outright lies”
“The victim’s parents themselves debunked this shameless propaganda. BJP is willing to exploit grief just to push their filthy narrative!,” the party said.
The TMC also accused the BJP of using the August 9 tragedy to gain political ground in West Bengal.
“The BJP is not doing this for any justice for the victim. They are merely politicising the issue for political gain which is hurting the sentiments of the victim’s parents,” TMC minister Shashi Panja alleged.
Panja also accused the BJP’s IT Cell of spreading “fake” videos related to the RG Kar incident in an attempt to spread chaos in the state.
