New  Delhi, September 7: The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday summoned Rashtriya Janata Dal chief Lalu Prasad Yadav and his son Tejashwi in alleged IRCTC hotels scam. While Lalu will appear before the investigating agency on September 11, Tejashwi will appear for questioning on September 12.

Highlights

  • Lalu Prasad to appear before CBI on September 11
  • Tejashwi Yadav to appear for questioning on September 12
  • ED had registered money laundering case against Lalu, his family

In July, the Enforcement Directorate had registered a money laundering case against Lalu and his family members in a railway hotels allotment corruption case dating back to the UPA tenure when he was the railways minister. The case was registered under sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Earlier, the CBI had registered a criminal FIR and conducted multiple searches against the former Bihar chief minister and others in connection with the case. The CBI FIR alleged that Prasad, as railway minister, handed over the maintenance of two IRCTC hotels to a company after receiving a bribe in the form of prime land in Patna through a ‘benami’ company owned by Sarla Gupta.

The FIR was registered on July 5 in connection with favours allegedly extended to Sujata Hotels in awarding a contract for the upkeep of the hotels in Ranchi and Puri and receiving premium land as ‘quid pro quo’.

The alleged corruption case also led Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar breaking away from the Mahagathbandhan and joining hands with the Bharatiya Janata Party. The 15-month-alliance was broken and it had cost Tejashwi his deputy chief minister post. The crack in the alliance started appearing after CBI named Tejashwi in its chargesheet in an alleged corruption case.
