Earlier on Thursday, TMC leader Dereck O’brien visited the ex-serviceman’s family in Haryana and expressed grief over the loss. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has sought details of the incident from the department of ex-servicemen welfare. Parrikar tweeted, “Saddened by the death of subedar Ram Kishen Grewal. I express my heartfelt condolences. I have asked officials to provide me with details”.  Robert Vadra, an Indian businessman and the husband of Priyanka Gandhi also expressed grief over suicide of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal. In his statement to ANI, he said, “Saddened to learn of the suicide of ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal”.

Before the suicide incident, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar claimed that nearly 21 lakh ex-servicemen were benefiting from the OROP scheme. As per reports, army veterans made a statement that contradicted Parrikar’s claim. The veterans said it has been six months and we have not heard a word about correcting the anomalies in the One Rank One Pension scheme.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi accepted the demand of One Rank One Pension scheme for army veterans and promised to fulfill his promises. However, for long, these demands were not fulfilled. Grewal, who committed suicide yesterday wrote in his suicide note that he is giving up his life for the soldiers of the country and what made him take this step was the delay in One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme.
