YouTube star Lilly Singh, aka Superwoman, has just given us another reason to be insanely proud of her. The Indo-Canadian comedian has released her latest video—but it is a little different than her usual hilarious skits. In the music video, we get to see Singh in her musician avatar and to no one’s surprise, she nails it.
Aptly titled “Voices,” Singh gives us a glimpse into her mind through this video; a glimpse into the many lives she has to lead, as well as the many personas she has to put up. She is a star, a comedian, an artist, a musician, an actor, a host. She is also a woman who battled depression and overcame it. She is a someone who belongs to multiple ethnicities. She is a daughter and a friend.
In our own lives, we deal with several similar labels and identities we are given. We want to deal with the voices in our head, the one that tells us to aim higher and achieve success. Then there is one that tells us to quit our materialistic side and focus on improving the world instead. There is a narcissistic voice dueling with a sympathetic voice. It’s only human—Singh understands that.
Her journey is, perhaps, one of the most relatable ones so far. Her openness in dealing with her fans, her honesty, and sheer talent have given us all reasons to look up to her. With “Voices,” she solidifies that stance.
The 10-minute long video features all the voices she has. It begins with her rapping about her success and the hard work she had to put in to reach where she is now. She puts in her appearance on Forbes’ list while sitting on a gold throne as cash surrounds it. Naturally, all of this may give her some sense of entitlement.
In the very next phase, she sits in a lonely, broken room wondering how success can change her. She’s working hard to make her family proud, but would they rather she spend more time with them. She’d prefer hanging out with friends like she did before. What if fame makes her lonely and her only friend is Forbes? We are always told to be ambitious while also being told we’ll never get there. She confesses that her journey might mess her up because of insecurities.
This is followed by another version in which Singh sings about how she’d not talk about her day and just be intimately close with someone. She’s a tomboy but with a figure, and she knows it. As expected, she looks absolutely stunning.
The video changes tunes to feature her in a groovy bar in her usual funky zone. She’s just a carefree, fun-loving woman who doesn’t want to shave her legs, can’t get a smokey eye right, and has split ends in her hair but she doesn’t give a damn. She just wants to enjoy her perfect life as it is. She has no problems and she’s worth it.
This is followed by the most important aspect of the video yet. She just raps and sings about how our world is changing: hatred, violence, racism, gender bias and other issues are taking over. On a screen behind her, we see images of terror attacks, protests against Donald Trump, and police brutality. She talks about how women are not to be blamed for wearing short skirts and how those who are scared of Muslims have a weak mind due to ignorance. She takes a stance against the world we live in, something we all must do.
It is easy to relate to one or all of these five sides of her Singh shows us in this video. As she says towards the end of her video, “We all have these voices in our heads. It’s up to us to decide which ones we listen to.” Not many singers tackle so many issues in one music video itself, and we’re glad Singh is the one to do so. If this is how her music is going to be like, sign us up!
