New Delhi, September 9: As per the orders passed by the Supreme Court of India after hearing the Lok Niti Foundation case regarding linking of Aadhaar card and mobile phones, all SIM cards need to be verified with Aadhaar and all unlinked phones will be deactivated from February 2018. Earlier this year, the apex court had asked the Modi government to frame out policies in respect to SIM cards to avoid any misuse.
The court had even asked the central government to install such a plan so that a person fills out and deposits a form every time a prepaid recharge is made.
Earlier, Lok Niti Foundation had sought the intervention of India’s top court to underline the unauthorized use of SIM cards in mobile phones. Highlighting the mobile phone verification issue in the PIL filed by the foundation, the main point of concern was that unauthorized SIM cards were a grave threat to the national security. The SC bench headed by Justice J.S. Khehar was of the opinion that it was essential to pluck out the fictitious subscribers to monitor the fraudulent activities that take place.
The central government had directed the telecom companies to inform their subscribers about the linking of cell phones to Aadhaar through emails, text messages or advertisements.
