March 6: The weekend started with a lot of buzz around JNU Student Union President Kanhaiy Kumar’s foray into politics, after CMI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury announced on Friday that Kumar will campaign for the party in the upcoming elections in West Bengal. While, Kanhaiya has not agreed to the rumours, he has neither denied taking part in politics in the future. Meanwhile, there was shocking news of a youth from Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki, who was tortured, beaten and sodomised by his employer in Saudi Arabia.
The youth Mohammad Shami had gone to Saudi on the promise of being given work as a cleaner in a mosque, and was also promised a salary of 1200 Rial as monthly salary, but was subjected to intense torture once he reached there. Shami’s passport was confiscated by the employer, who would regularly beat him up with iron rods, lock him up and starve him. Shami’s mother and brother have written to the Union External Affairs Ministry, although the Ministry is still to take cognizance of the matter. On the political front, elections were announced in West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, on Friday. While West Bengal will see the elections unfold in all of six phases, Assam will see two phases, while Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will all see single phase elections. West Bengal chief minister Mamta Banerjee who is also the chief of Trinamool Congress declared the complete list of 294 candidates who will be contesting elections from various constituencies in the state.
