Delhi Police speak on the detention of Ministers and politicians: “Leaders from across parties were requested to not gather near gate because of hospital services getting hampered due to crowd. We were submitted a written complaint saying that crowd be removed from here so as to maintain medical services. But when nobody paid heed to our direction to vacate the area, we detained people at different locations. We didn’t stop anyone from meeting the family, our concern was just that medical services shouldn’t get hampered.”

New Delhi, November 2: Indian National Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi was arrested twice by the Delhi police on Wednesday. The second time that he was detained was after he met the greiving family of the late ex-serviceman Ram Kishan Grewal, who committed suicide today, due to the non-implementation of the much awaited  and long pending One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme for retired Army personnel. Later Arvind Kejriwal was also formally detained after being denied permission to meet Grewal’s family members.

Kejirwal and other Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) ministers were being denied permission by the police forces to meet the family, who have all been assembled at Cannaught Place police station.  “Formally detained by the police. No idea where they are taking me”, Kejriwal tweeted on Wednesday evening. Deputy CM Manish Sisodia retweeted Kejriwal’s tweet, saying, “This is emergency”. Rahul Gandhi, along with Member of Parliament Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia and other Congress leaders, who had accompanied Gandhi, have all been detained at Tilak Marg Police station in Delhi.

Gandhi’s arrest came a few hours after he was released by the police. Meanwhile, autopsy is being conducted on the body of Grewal at the Lady Hardinge Hospital, which is where Kejriwal’s car was also halted. “My vehicle surrounded by police. Not allowing me to leave,” the AAP chief had earlier tweeted. Rahul Gandhi had also expressed his anger on a police man over what he called was ‘detention’ of the late service man’s family. “Do you not feel ashamed? He is a son of an army veteran, he is his father… And you are arresting them?”, Gandhi had asked the the police personnel. ALSO READ: OROP suicide row: Rahul Gandhi detained and Arvind Kejriwal denied permission to meet kin of late ex-serviceman
