This came after Mumbai witnessed unexpected heavy rains and thundershowers on Friday morning. Mumbaikars woke up to thunderstorms and rains after almost a week long dry spell. With the rains continuing for over an hour in some areas, majorly in South Mumbai, traffic snarls were reported. Traffic jams were reported around Lower Parel, Eastern Freeway among other areas.
There was lightening followed by thunder sounds in Lower Parel. Meanwhile, the Mumbai local was running on schedule with no delays reported so far. While the rains had stopped in areas like Santacruz and Bandra, it continued to pour for about 2 hours in most areas of South Mumbai.
Twenty-two commuters were killed here on Friday when a horrific stampede broke out on a narrow railway foot overbridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel stations when hundreds took shelter there to escape pounding rains, officials said.
