New Delhi, December 28: Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on Monday sought support from all the political parties for a new Parliament building in the national capital. Through her new proposal she also appealed that the current building has become a heritage site it needs to be conserved.
Speaking to the media, Mahajan said that Parliament House which has been constructed in 1927 is now almost 89 years old and has become a national heritage building. Adding on she said that time has come to renovate it according to the current standards or either conserve it a heritage site, but for that all the parties need to come together. The new proposal was made by the Speaker herself. Mahajan is of the opinion that in the coming time number of parliamentarians are supposed to rise and the current would not be able to accommodate all these chosen representatives. She said that the current needs like digital empowerment can only be possible when where would be paperless work. Mahajan added, “To make Parliament paperless, some changes need to be made. The number of lawmakers is also supposed to increase in a few year.”
The construction of the Parliament House started in 1912 by famous British architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker. After continuous efforts and hardwork, the building came to existence in 1927. The Lok Sabha has 543 lawmakers, while Rajya Sabha has a capacity to accommodate 245 members. With the new building being proposed, it seems the Speaker wants a house which will have the capacity to accommodate more than 1000 lawmakers with all the advanced equipped technological reforms.
