New Delhi, June 19: Five people including a woman and a child were killed as massive fire that broke out at two hotels in Charbagh area of Lucknow on Tuesday morning. Initially, the blaze broke out at the Hotel Virat international and soon spread to the adjacent SSJ International Hotel, gutting both buildings. Several fire tenders and water tankers were pressed into service to douse the flame. The cause of the fire is yet to be known.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Kumar said the fire started in the basement and soon leaped to the upper floors.

Confirming the casualties, S Pandey, IG Lucknow said,”Four people have died and more than 50 people were rescued from the building. Cause of fire still to be ascertained. If we find any lapse on hotel’s part during our investigation, we will take strict action against the people concerned.”

As per eye-witnesses both the SSJ International and Hotel Viraat did not have proper fire-fighting arrangements.

Notably, the incident came merely a week after a fire had engulfed a temporary roadside cotton mattress, pillow sale and cotton beating outlet on a vacant plot in Behta Sabolinear Gulachin temple under Vikasnagar police station.
