Lucknow: A 38-year-old executive of a huge multinational company was allegedly shot by a police constable in the wee hours of Saturday after the deceased refused to stop his car during routine checks by the police in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow. Reportedly, Tiwari worked as area sales manager with Apple. The shooting took place at around 1:30 AM in the Gomti Nagar extension area.

The deceased has been identified as Vivek Tiwari who succumbed to his injuries after he was shifted to a hospital. He was shot at by the police after he refused to stop his SUV despite being asked by the police to do so.

The reported incident took place when Tiwari along with one of his colleagues was returning home after a mobile launch event. As per Superintendent of Police Lucknow, Kalanidhi Naithani, the deceased panicked when the cops fired in order for him to stop his vehicle but rammed his car into a pillar of an underpass.

Meanwhile, Tiwari’s wife Kalpana questioned the motives of the city police and asked if her husband was a “terrorist” that the police shot him. Asserting that the police had no right to shoot her husband, Kalpana demanded an explanation from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

On the other hand, deceased brother-in-law too questioned the government asking if Vivek Tiwari was a terrorist. He further went on to demand an unbiased CBI inquiry. His brother-in-law too demanded that the UP CM take cognisance of the situation and bring speedy justice.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya assured that an investigation is underway and action will be taken against the guilty. However, the police constable, Prashant Chaudhary who has been accused of firing at Tiwari claimed that several rounds were fired after the deceased tried to kill him by running his car over him.

Chaudhury claimed that he fired a bullet in his self-defence. However, a second policeman has also been arrested and medical examination of both is being done to ascertain whether they were drunk when the incident took place, an official informed.

Meanwhile, Tiwari’s colleague who was with him while the incident took place refused to comment on the matter saying she wasn’t in a condition to speak to anyone at the moment. She added, “I am not in a condition to say anything right now. Even I want the culprit to be punished. I am under no pressure to hide the truth.”

Lucknow’s Lohia Hospital’s Director, Devendra Singh Negi spoke about Tiwari and said that he had a bullet injury near the ear on the left side and that he died during treatment. He further said that Tiwari’s body had been sent for post-mortem.

Vivek Tiwari’s uncle called it a cold-blooded murder and said that having served in the police, he knows that a person is never shot in the neck. He added that such an incident never occurred the way it has under the Yogi government.

UP ADG Law & Order Anand Kumar also said that a case of murder under Section 302 Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the two policemen and stringent action will be taken. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the incident further.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that ‘it was not an encounter’ and a CBI inquiry will be ordered into the incident.
