A total number of 494 candidates contested election for 95 wards of Ludhiana municipal corporation. Stray incidents of violence marred the polling in 95 wards of the civic body, with opposition parties claiming that the ruling Congress indulged in “booth capturing” and “bogus voting”. A SAD-BJP delegation on Monday met Punjab Governor V P Singh Badnore and urged him to direct the state government to scrap the Ludhiana municipal corporation poll process and hold elections afresh.

The Congress, which is in power in Punjab since last year, refuted the charges, stating that the opposition parties have accepted defeat even before the results are declared. The Congress had earlier won municipal elections in the Amritsar, Patiala and Jalandhar corporations in December. The party had also tasted victory in 20 out of 29 Municipal Councils and Nagar Panchayats. The Congress, led by Captain Amarinder Singh, wrested power from the SAD-BJP combine, winning 77 of the 117 seats in Assembly election held last year.
