Mumbai, Feb 22: The results of elections conducted in ten corporations across Maharashtra would be declared on Thursday. The polling was conducted on February 21. The civic bodies which were contested include the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), Nashik Municipal Corporation, Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC), Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PMC), Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Ulhasnagar Municipal Corporation (UMC), Solapur Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Amravati Municipal Corporation. Counting of votes would begin tomorrow at 10 AM.

The final official tally of results is expected to be uploaded tomorrow by the State Election Commission. Apart from the ten civic corporations, the results of zilla parishad and panchayat samiti polls would also be declared tomorrow. 25 zilla parishads and 283 panchayat samiti posts were contested in several districts of Maharashtra in the two-phase polling held on February 16 and 21. The highlight of the civic elections in Maharashtra was the bitter feud witnessed by state electorate between allies-cum-rivals Shiv Sena and BJP. Both the saffron parties were locked in an intense political battle, bringing their ruling coalition in the state on brink of breakup. Shiv Sena supremo Uddhav Thackeray made a blatant threat, claiming that Shiv Sena may resign from the Devendra Fadnavis-led state government after the results of civic elections are declared.
Shiv Sena and BMC contested as allies in the BMC for the past 22 years. However, no pre-poll arrangement could be made between the two parties ahead of BMC elections 2017. BJP sought 114 seats of the total 227 in Mumbai civic polls. The demand was made on the basis of BJP’s performance in 2014 assembly elections. BJP succeeded in winning 19 seats out of the 36 constituencies falling in Mumbai region.
However, Uddhav Thackeray rejected their demand, asserting that the pre-poll arrangement should remain same as per the pact sealed by them ahead of 2012 polls. Despite several round of negotiations, no reconciliation could be made.
In the 2012 BMC elections, Shiv Sena succeeded in winning 75 out of the 138 seats it contested. BJP emerged victorious on 31 seats.
The exit polls released by India Today Axis-My India predicts a hung verdict in BMC. Both Shiv Sena and BJP are expected to grab 32 per cent of the votes. Shiv Sena is predicted to win 86-94 seats, whereas, the BJP is projected to secure 80-88 seats. Congress, which won 52 seats in 2012, is predicted to be reduced to 30-34.
