The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) took an early lead in crucial Palghar Lok Sabha seat while in Bhandara-Gondiya the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate was ahead by over 3,000 votes, early trends indicate.

In Palghar, BJP candidate Rajendra Gavit was leading over his nearest Bahujan Vikas Aghadi rival Baliram Jadhav. In Bhandara-Gondiya, NCP leader Madhukar Kukde was leading over his BJP rival Hemant Patle.

A total of 18 candidates are contesting for Bhandara-Gondiya Lok Sabha seat where the saffron party has locked horns with the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). As many as seven candidates are in fray in Palghar where the race is between Rajendra Gavit and Shiv Sena candidate Shriniwas Wanaga.

The Palghar bypoll was necessitated after the death of sitting BJP MP Chintaman Wanaga due to heart attack in January this year. In Bhandara-Gondiya, the bypoll was necessitated after Nana Patole quit as BJP MP to return to the Congress.

Elections in both the Lok Sabha seats were marred by large-scale incidents of malfunctioning EVM-VVPATs with all the opposition parties and ruling ally Shiv Sena hurling allegations of foul play and tampering of the machines.
