Mumbai, May 26: Congress party emerged as single largest party in Bhiwandi and Malegaon Municipal Corporation election, whereas Bharatiya Janata Party is set to win the 78 member Panvel Municipal Corporation where the polls were conducted for the first time. Polling for the Panvel, Bhiwandi and Malegaon Municipal Corporation was held on May 24. While Congress retained its hold in Bhiwandi and Malegaon civic bodies, the BJP is heading for a big win in Panvel Municipal Corporation. The election to these three municipal bodies was held against the backdrop of BJP’s sterling performance in the recently held polls to the 13 municipal corporations, 25 Zilla Parishads and 210 Municipal Council and Nagar Panchayat.
Congress won the Bhiwandi Municipal Corporation election with a decisive mandate, winning 46 out of the 90 seats contested. BJP, which won 8 seats in the previous polls, also made big gains and emerged at second spot bagging 20 seats. Shiv Sena maintained its tally of 16. While the NCP failed to win single seat, its alliance partner Samajwadi Party won 2 seats. Congress also emerged as the largest party in Malegaon Municipal Corporation election, but fell short of the majority mark. The grand old party won 28 seats, while the NCP+Janata Dal (Secular) combine bagged 26 seats in the Muslim-dominated city. NCP won 20 seats, whereas the JD(S) got 6. Shiv Sena managed to win 13 seats, whereas the AIMIM won 7 seats. Notably, BJP won 9 seats. However, all 22 Muslim candidates of the saffron party lost polls.
Since the Congress has fallen short of majority, both Congress and NCP have the chance to rule the Malegaon Municipal Corporation. Shiv Sena and AIMIM will play key role in this process. A party needs 43 seats to get the mayoral post in Malegaon Municipal Corporation. The result of one seat is awaited in Panvel Municipal Corporation. When the last report came, the BJP was heading towards a decisive victory with a two-third majority. The saffron party bagged 51 seats, whereas, the PWP-Congress-NCP alliance won 25. Shiv Sena secured 1 seat in Panvel civic body polls.
