Maharashtra, January 8: Voting begins for the fourth and final phase of the Maharashtra municipal council and Nagar Panchayat elections. The elections that began at 8:00 AM this morning will decide on councillors and Preseidents for 11 local bodies in Nagpur and Gondia districts of Vidarbha in Maharashtra.
The Municipal councils that are going to polls in Nagpur include Kamthi, Umred, Katol, Kalameshwar, Mohpa, Ramtek, Narkhed, Khapa and Saoner. In the Gondia district, Tirora and Gondia will be electing representatives.
While Gondia has 42 seats, which is the largest number of seats within the towns that are going to polls today, Kamptee has 32 and Umred has 25. Meanwhile, in Katol 23 seats are up for grabs and 20 in Saoner. All the areas have 17 seats each.
In the three previous phases of the election across Maharashtra, BJP came out with a clear-cut majority and has managed to bag 1090 councillor seats and 64 Municipal Council President posts.
Thus far, Congress has only managed to bag 894 seats, While NCP has bagged 786 seats and Shiv Sena 598. The rest of the seats have been won by Independent candidates and other political parties. In the first three phases, out of the 180 posts of Municipal Council President, BJP secured 64, Congress 33, NCP 21 and Shiv Sena 26.
The fourth phase that is underway today, is set to determine the fate of 92 candidates who are cotesting for 11 municipal council president positions and 1191 candidates for 245 seats for councillor posts. The counting will be held tomorrow.
