Maharashtra On High Alert: 91 Cases Of New Covid-19 Omicron Sub-Variant Reported Amid Infections Surge In US
Mumbai: In the latest development in the Covid-19 Omicron cases, Maharashtra recorded 91 cases of the new subvariant KP.2 on Monday. This subvariant has surpassed the previously detected JN.1 variant and is now spreading infections in several countries. Major cities such as Pune and Thane recorded 51 and 20 cases of the KP.2 subvariant, respectively. Seven cases each were detected in Amravati, Aurangabad, and two cases in Solapur. Ahmednagar, Sangli, Nashik, and Latur each reported one case of the KP.2 variant. The good news is that no cases of the dreadful variant were reported in densely populated Mumbai.
Notably, this new strain was first detected in January and it is dominating the United States.
By the end of 2023, a Covid strain known as KP.2, which is actually a variant of JN.1, had gained prominence and became the predominant strain.
According to Maharashtra genome sequencing coordinator Dr Rajesh Karyakarte,
By the month of March and April, KP.2 variant of the Covid-19 had become the predominant strain in the entire region. However, no increase in hospitalisations or severe cases were reported, The Times of India reported.
In March, there was a slight uptick in the number of Covid-19 cases in Maharashtra, averaging around 250 infections. This surge is thought to be connected to the spreading of the KP.2 variant.
