Kolhapur: A woman allegedly committed suicide on Saturday in Kolhapur city of Maharashtra as she was unable to bear the death of her ailing mother-in-law. The incident was reported in Apte Nagar residential locality.

As per reports, 70-year-old Malti M Lokhande died after a prolonged battle with cancer during wee hours on Saturday. Unable to bear the news of her death, the deceased daughter-in-law, identified as Shubhangi S Lokhande, went to the balcony of their flat and jumped to death. The incident has left the residents of the colony in a state of shock.

The 49-year-old jumped off the third floor, police official Irfan Gadkari of Juna Rajwada Police Station was quoted as saying in a report.

As per the family members and the locals, Shubhangi could not bear the shock of losing her mother-in-law. However, the police have launched a probe into the matter and are investigating the motive behind her death.

Meanwhile, both the bodies have been sent for post-mortem to the Kolhapur CPR Hospital. A case of accidental death has been registered in both the case and the family members, neighbours and several others are also being questioned in connection with the ‘suicide’ of Shubhangi, the police have said.

In another incident reported in January, an 18-year-old domestic help in Haryana’s Gurugram died after falling from the balcony of the kitchen of a flat on the 19th floor in a residential society. Police had suspected it to be a case of suicide as preliminary investigation suggested that she was depressed due to some family issue.
