Major fire in Kandivali kills two, 200 shanties reduced to ashes

At least two people died and over 200 shanties were gutted after massive fire broke out in a godown in Mumbai's Kandivali area.

Mumbai, Dec 7: At least two people died and over 200 shanties were gutted after massive fire broke out in a godown in Mumbai’s Kandivali area. According to reports, around 12: 30 pm fire brigade received call about the blaze in Damu Nagar area of Kandivali. Gas cylinders were stored in the godown and explosion in one of the cylinders triggered the series of explosions and massive fire.

“Our department received a call at about 12.33 PM and another message at about 12.51 PM about the fire. Immediately 16 fire engines, 12 water tankers, five fire brigade officials along with other jawans were rushed to the spot to douse the flames,” Deputy Chief Fire Official P S Rahangdale said. 16 fire tenders are at the site and trying to douse the fire. Massive plumes of smoke have been blowing out of the building. “We heard a loud blast around 12:45 pm and then 15-20 explosions one after the other,” a resident from a nearby area told NDTV. The godown is reportedly located in a congested colony, making it difficult for fire tenders to reach the site. The fire has led to traffic jams in Kandivali. There are also fears that the fire could soon spread to a nearby areas. However, local residents claimed that the inferno occurred due to a series of cylinder explosions. Meanwhile, police cordoned off the area and were trying to verify the claims of the locals.
