Malappuram, April 17: K Kunhalikutty, Indian Union Muslim League (IUML)candidate has secured massive lead in the bye-elections held in Malappuram and it seems like IUML will indeed retain the Malappuram Lok Sabha seat. CPI (M) candidate M.B. Faisal is the closest candidate to K Kunhalikutty by the end of the initial vote counting rounds. As of 9.37 am, when counting was still progress, Kunhalikutty received 186,387 votes in the Malappuram bypoll, while Faisal received 121,173 votes. With a margin as vast as this, it seems IUML will be able to retain this constituency seat. In all of this Bharatiya Janata Party’s N. Sreeprakash is at the third position and has secured just 24581 votes.
Nine candidates are contesting the Malappuram bypolls this year and amongst them the primary contenders are clearly the IUML and the CPI(M). P K Kunhalikutty who has been fielded by the IUML was the former Kerala Industries Minister. On the other hand, the CPI-M fielded M B Faisal, a young face and the BJP fielded N. Sreeprakash. There are six other independent candidates in fray.
Notably, as of now the 1567 votes were cast in the NOTA category.

The polling for the Malappuram bypoll results was held on April 12. While peaceful polling was recorded , by the end of the day, over 68 per cent turnout was recorded in the Malappuram bypolls.
