Mamata Banerjee to meet PM Narendra Modi tomorrow

Banerjee is known for her default anti-BJP and anti-Modi stance, and hence this meet will be important keeping in mind the changing dynamics of politics and approaching pivotal Elections

New Delhi, May 24: As per latest reports, Trinamool Congress (TMC)chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee has scheduled a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. Initial reports claimed that Banerjee was actually looking  forward to meet the Prime minister on Tuesday and had sought an interview, but was given an appointment with Modi tomorrow.

This meet of the West Bengal chief minister and Prime minister is of high interest because generally, Banerjee is known for her anti-BJP and anti-Modi stance. The objective of the meet is unclear yet and given there was no prior announcement the matter seems urgent. However, the Presidential elections are drawing close as well and will be held in July 2017.

The political clash between Banerjee and Modi was in its highest point following the former’s protest against demonetisation. Banerjee is also generally paranoid of the BJP government’s intentions with her and her part members. The crackdown on many TMC leaders over alleged links in several scams engraved the paranoia deeper into her.

An important event which is approaching West Bengal soon is the Rajya Sabha Election necessitated by the expiration of tenure of six members of the Rajya Sabha. The question in all of this is Mamata Banerjee has also recently grown close to the Congress and had held meetings with Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Vice President Rahul Gandhi. The TMC has also clarified their intention and has reportedly asked the members to go soft on the Congress during the Rajya Sabha polls. And now this meet with PM Modi.

Obviously it is not a trust building exercise that ‘Didi’, as Banerjee is referred too, is trying to conduct, but the timing of the meet, ahead of, firstly, the Presidential poll and the Rajya Sabha poll does indeed makes us wonder, which way is the pendulum swinging.
