New Delhi: Tensions escalated at a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday after a family member of a 33-year-old woman who died during childbirth, slapped one of the doctors. In a video shared by the Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) Hospital that surfaced online, a grieving man was seen thrashing and assaulting a doctor who tried to explain the situation to the woman’s kin. A huge commotion can be seen in the footage. Several hospital staff members and relatives were present during the incident. There were also a few police persons present at the scene. A family member of the deceased woman told reporters that she seemed to be recovering last night, until around 3 AM when they received a call that her condition was critical. By the time, her family could arrive at the ward, the woman had already breathed her last. The kin alleged that there was utter medical negligence. On the other hand, hospital authorities said that the woman had delivered her child on Wednesday morning and was in stable condition throughout the day. However, the mother’s health deteriorated early on Thursday, following which she died of cardiac arrest.
“This is an unfortunate incident. The doctor, who tried to explain the situation to the family members and also suggested a postmortem, was assaulted. We express our condolences to the family. However, physical violence is unacceptable,” a CMRI spokesperson told the media.
The family members asserted that they would resort for legal help and will not seek any compensation. A police complaint against the hospital alleging medical negligence. CMRI is also considering to file a counter-complaint on the same.
