New Delhi, June 9: Union Minister for Women & Child Development and on Thursday raised a storm when she accused the Environment Ministry of harbouring a ‘lust for killing animals’. She said that the Ministry headed by Prakash Javadekar is frivolously granting permission to state government’s to kill innocent animals. She was reacting to the reports of large numbers of nilgai being killed in Patna, in Bihar. She even implicated Javadekar’s Ministry of ‘hiring shooters from other state’ to kill nilgai. Speaking to ANI on the issue, Gandhi said, “The Environment Ministry here is writing to every state asking them which animal they want to kill and they will grant permission. “Environment Ministries own wildlife department said that they don’t want to kill animals and should not be pressurised for the same. I don’t understand this lust for killing,” Gandhi said. For his part, Javadekar hit back at Gandhi saying that permissions to kill animals are only given in situations of the animals posing a threat to farmers’ crops. “When state govts write to us about farmers suffering due to crop damage by animals, then such permissions are given. It is on the recommendation of state govts, also its an old law”, he told ANI.
