New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has intensified his attacks on the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. In the latest attack, CM Sarma took a jibe at the grand old party over its election manifesto, alleging that it was more appropriate for elections in Pakistan than in India. He said that the manifesto aims at dividing society to come to power.
Notably, the grand old party announced its election manifesto on Friday for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The manifesto focused on five ‘pillars of justice’ and 25 guarantees under those. Major promises made by the party are nationwide caste census, a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP), and scrapping of the Agnipath scheme.
Reacting to the manifesto, CM Sarma stated that Congress’s manifesto was “politics of appeasement”.
“This is politics of appeasement and we condemn it. The manifesto feels like it is not for elections in Bharat but for Pakistan,” he told to mediapersons in Jorhat.
He added that no one, either Hindu or Muslim, support polygamy or child marriage and revival of triple talaq.
“The mentality of the Congress is to divide the society and come to power,” he said.
Expressing his confidence that the saffron party will win all 14 Lok Sabha seats in Assam, the state Chief Minister stated the BJP had taken the form of an ‘andolan’ that is to make the country a world leader.
Congress hit back at CM Sarma, saying that a turncoat like him will never understand the secular and inclusive ethos of the party. It is worth noting that Himanta Sarma left congress and joined the saffron party in 2015.
“Sarma had been in the Congress for several years, but he could not understand the main ethos of the party. That is why he went to the BJP. Even after being in the BJP for some time now, he still tries to defame Congress to prove his loyalty to the saffron party,” Assam Congress spokesperson Bedabrata Bora told news agency PTI.
Bora dismissed Sarma’s allegations, stating emphatically that the party’s platform is committed to safeguarding the well-being and interests of all community sections.
The election process in Assam is slated to take place in three phases – April 19, April 26, and May 7. The count of votes is earmarked for June 4.
