Guwahati: At least five people have been arrested for allegedly killing a man on suspicion of vehicle theft in Manipur’s Imphal West. As per police reports, 26-year-old Farooq Khan was beaten to death by the residents Tharoijam village. The villagers destroyed the car in which Khan was travelling. Two others who were accompanying Khan managed to escape and save themselves.
Khan was a management student and was a resident of Lilong in Thoubal district. While villagers of the district alleged that Khan and his friends were caught stealing a two-wheeler around 3.30 am on Thursday, Muslim groups said that Khan was innocent. They have even asked the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
Police are yet to verify the claims being made by the villagers. The police said that at least thirteen people who attacked the victim and the other two men have been identified and will be arrested soon. The villagers, however, attacked the Patsoi police station after five of the accused were arrested. The station officer in-charge was injured in the clash that followed.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Human Rights Commission has registered a suo moto case, and directed the Manipur deputy general of police to submit a report by September 22. A joint action committee has also been formed to probe the incident which said that Khan was innocent and had left his residence to meet a friend.
Mob-lynchings have become usual in the district. At least two people were assaulted by residents on suspicion of child-lifting in Kangpokpi district nearly two months ago.
