The Gandhi scion took over the party reins from his mother and the longest Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The Amethi MP will now lead the 132-year-old party and has a daunting task ahead of him. “Rahul is taking over when there are disturbing trends. Rahul ji you have travelled all over the country and knows people’s problem first hand. Under your leadership, our party will scale new heights of glory,” Singh said. Manmohan Singh was the prime minister for two consecutive terms of UPA when Sonia was at the helm of affairs of the party. In the 19-year tenure of Sonia as Congress president, Singh was the prime minister for 10 years and also a member of Congress Working Committee.
Rahul Gandhi took over as Congress President on Saturday. He has succeeded his mother Sonia Gandhi, who headed the party for 19 years since 1998. The 47-year-old was officially declared party president in a ceremony held at the party’s 24 Akbar Road headquarters in New Delhi.
Addressing the gathering of Congress leaders and party workers at the party headquarters here, Rahul Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “Congress took India to 21st century, but the prime minister today is taking us back to the medieval times.” He added, only the Congress and its workers can put a stop at what the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led government is doing to this country.
