New Delhi: Three-time Goa chief minister and former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar passed away on Sunday evening after a long battle with cancer. Parrikar, 63, was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer in February 2018 and has been in and out of hospitals in Goa, Mumbai, Delhi and New York since then.
If reports are to be believed, the BJP stalwart had been on life support system since late Saturday night. He is survived by two sons and their families. Parrikar’s wife Medha died in 2001 following an illness.
“Extremely sorry to hear of the passing of Shri Manohar Parrikar, Chief Minister of Goa, after an illness borne with fortitude and dignity. An epitome of integrity and dedication in public life, his service to the people of Goa and of India will not be forgotten,” tweeted President Ram Nath Kovind.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh also offer his condolences to the family. “Deeply saddened and pained by the demise of my dear friend and CM of Goa, Shri ManoharParrikar. He was known for his honesty, integrity and simplicity. He served the nation and the state of Goa with great diligence. My heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family,” tweeted Singh
Expressing grief over Parrikar’s demise, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said,”I am deeply saddened by the news of the passing of Goa CM, Shri Manohar Parrikar Ji, who bravely battled a debilitating illness for over a year. Respected and admired across party lines, he was one of Goa’s favourite sons. My condolences to his family in this time of grief.”
Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also paid her tribute to Parrikar and said, “My condolences to the bereaved family of Shri. Manohar Parrikar. I met him only once, when he graciously visited my mother at the hospital two years ago. May his soul rest in peace.”
Referring Parrikar as a leader who came up with pragmatic solutions, BJP leader and Union Minister VK Singh said his demise leaves a void in people’s lives.
“Sad demise of Manohar Parrikar ji leaves a void in our lives. He was a leader who came up with pragmatic solutions to the most complex problems-Goa & India have lost a stalwart today. The nation and I mourn your loss and will miss you. Rest In Peace my dear friend.”
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also paid tribute to the leader saying,”Saddened at the passing away of Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar ji. He patiently endured his illness. Condolences to his family and his admirers.”
Meanwhile, a condolence meet is scheduled to be held in the Union Cabinet at 11 am on Monday for the late Goa Chief MinisterParrikar, news agency ANI informed.
Relatives of ailing Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, senior government officials and political leaders had started arriving at his residence in Dona Paula this evening after the Chief Minister’s Office in a tweet said,”Chief Minister @manoharparrikar’s health condition is extremely critical. Doctors are trying their best”.
Among the first to arrive at the chief minister’s private residence was state Director General of Police Pranab Nanda.
Police presence around the house has also been increased. The former Defence Minister’s health, which has been fluctuating for a year, took a turn for the worse in the past two days. Several party leaders and allies in the state government had rushed to meet him on Saturday.
