Mumbai, August 9: Termed as ‘Maratha Kranti Morcha’, the Maratha Community has planned to hold one of its biggest protests in Mumbai today. Reports state that the protest will start at 11 AM from the Jijamata Udyan, Byculla and will terminate at Azad Maidan in South Mumbai at around 5 PM. Here are the video highlights of today’s protest at Azad Maidan:

The Mumbai Police had estimated that around 1.5 to 4 lakh people from across the state will participate in the Maratha Kranti Morcha on August 9. Mumbai will brace for heavy traffic disruptions throughout the day today as a mammoth number of participants of the Morcha is likely to choke Mumbai’s roads leading to Azad Maidan.

The Maratha Kranti Morcha is a silent protest against the rape and murder of a minor school girl from Kopardi, Ahmednagar in 2016. Reports state that a 15-year-old Maratha girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by four Dalit youths in Kopardi on July 13, 2016. Last year on 9 August, a number of Maratha organizations came together under the banner of Sakal Maratha Samaj to organize a massive silent march. Since 2016, the Maratha Kranti Morcha has since then carried out over 50 protests in the past one year. Preparations for the Mumbai march were in full swing this week. The Kopardi case is being heard in a court in Ahmednagar while the case for Maratha quota is being argued before the Bombay High Court.

The organizers of the Maratha Kranti Morcha have appealed the participants to observe the same code of conduct like in the previous protests. The code of conduct includes silent march, no speeches and slogans, no banners of any organization except the official logo of the Maratha Kranti Morcha among others.
