New Delhi: In a significant development, India has emerged as one of the countries with the largest metro networks in the world, marking a major achievement under the leadership of the Modi government. With the metro rail network expanding rapidly, India now holds the third position globally, following China in first place and the United States in second.

India’s metro system is often highlighted in global discussions about metro networks. As the world’s 5th largest economy, India’s metro rail network is expanding quickly, now stretching across 1000 km. This vast network places India as the third-largest metro system in the world, behind only China and the United States.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 1,200 crore today at around 12:15 PM in Delhi. Marking a significant milestone in enhancing regional connectivity, PM Modi will inaugurate the 13 km stretch of the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat corridor between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar, worth around Rs 4,600 crore.

With this inauguration, Delhi will get its first Namo Bharat connectivity. This will significantly ease travel between Delhi and Meerut and will benefit millions of people through high-speed and comfortable travel along with safety and reliability.

Speaking of the metro network, do you know when the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) opened the first corridor? The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) opened its first corridor between Shahdara and Tis Hazari on December 24, 2002. Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the 8.2-kilometer stretch of the Delhi Metro. However, the metro system in India began in 1984 with the first metro train running in Kolkata.

Metro trains have expanded far beyond Delhi and Kolkata, now serving 23 cities across 11 states in India. Back in 2014, metro services were limited to only 5 states and 5 cities. Today, the metro network is rapidly growing, with future plans to extend it to more states, including Madhya Pradesh.

India’s metro rail network has expanded to 1000 kilometers, making it the third-largest in the world, following China and the United States. In 2014, the network was only 248 kilometers long, but in the last decade, it has grown three times its size.

During a program last year, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that within the next two to three years, India is set to surpass the United States and become the second-largest metro network in the world.
