Moscow: Russia has stated that India can start the production of the fifth generation fighter jet Su-57 with its existing infrastructure. Russia has proposed that the same resources with which India manufactures the Su-30 MKI fighter aircraft can also be used to produce the Su-57 fighter jet. Russia reiterated its offer to sell India its fifth generation Su-57E stealth aircraft in February 2025, ahead of the Aero India 2025 exhibition. And once again, Russia’s state arms manufacturer Rosoboronexport has presented interesting offers for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
Russia had made a proposal in February for the “Su-57E” project, which includes the supply of Su-57 aircraft already manufactured in Russia, joint production in India, and assistance in the development of India’s fifth-generation fighter aircraft. On March 7, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported that Rosoboronexport indicated it could use the existing Su-30MKI infrastructure for local production of the Su-57E in India.
Russia’s new offer to India on the Su-57 has stated that if India agrees to this deal, Indian companies that manufacture the Russian Su-30MKI fighter jets could soon start producing the fifth-generation Su-57E fighter aircraft. In a statement released by the company on March 7, it was said, “If India is ready, the production of the Russian fifth-generation Su-57E fighter jet can be started in the factories that currently produce the Su-30MKI fighter jets in a short time.”
India already has around 260 Su-30MKI fighter jets, of which more than 220 aircraft have been manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in India under a Russian license.
The Su-57E is a fifth-generation fighter. Rosoboronexport has said that it is ready to complete the fleet upgradation programme for the Su-30MKI fighter jets of the Indian Air Force, which will involve Indian companies. The company has also said that the missiles manufactured by India will also be installed in the new fighter jets and this upgrade will make the combat capability of the Su-30MKI jet even more destructive.
According to a report by Eurasian Times, if the company’s proposals are understood correctly, it becomes clear that Russia is offering India three things. First, the production of the Su-57E in India, second, the upgrade of the Su-30MKI fighter jet with modern Indian weapons, and third, assistance with the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme that India is working on.
