New Delhi, April 26: The five Muslim candidates fielded by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ended up losing in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. Out of those five seats, where BJP attempted to woo minorities, four were won by the Congress, whereas, AAP succeeded in bagging one seat. The rejection of BJP among the Muslim electorate raises question whether the saffron party could penetrate within the community.
The five BJP candidates fielded by BJP are: Kuwar Rafi form Zakir Nagar, Sartaj Ahmed from Chauhan Banger, Sabra Malik from Mustafabad, Famudin Safi from Delhi Gate and Rubina Begum from Quresh Nagar.
The Aam Aadmi Party, which was voted in an overwhelming manner by the minority community in the Delhi assembly elections, succeeded in winning only the Chauhan Banger ward.
As per the result trends available by the time this report was published, BJP was set for a big win in the three wings of MCD. Out of the 270 wards contested, BJP is ahead on 184 seats. Congress was ahead on 42, whereas, the AAP was leading on 35 wards.

“The election result should be considered as referendum by Kejriwal. I suggest he should consider the option of resigning. People of Delhi feel betrayed by Kejriwal and his party, after they were given 67 out of 70 seats in 2015,” BJP leader Vijay Goel said.
AAP has refused to accept the mandate, alleging the polls were “rigged”. Addressing the media after the election result leads were out, AAP top brass leader Gopal Rai said, “This victory of BJP is due to the tampering of EVM. We will not accept this. A movement would be launched to fight against this betrayal of mandate.”
