New Delhi, Apr 18: The MCD election 2017 is a battle of prestige for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), after party’s disastrous performance in bye-elections to the Rajouri Garden Assembly constituency. While Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Rajouri Garden bypolls, Congress managed to bag second position, pushing AAP to a distant third spot. Similar three-cornered electoral battle is being witnessed in Rajouri Garden ward of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).
In Rajouri Garden ward, the BJP has fielded Colonel Oberoi against AAP candidate Manpreet and Congress’ Nirmal Singh Bhatia. In 2012 MCD elections, BJP’s Subhash Arya had won from Rajouri Garden ward. After loss in Rajouri Garden bypoll and Goa and Punjab Assembly elections, AAP is leaving no stone unturned to win the MCD elections 2017 as the outcome will be seen as a report card for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal led AAP government that he formed two years ago after winning 67 out of 70 assembly seats.
Delhi BJP president Manoj Tiwari is confident of winning the MCD elections 2017. “Rajouri Garden bypoll victory is just the trailer, we will sweep Delhi civic polls,” said Tiwari who has been knocking every door in Delhi for votes. Delhi CM and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal has rejected the claim that his party’s defeat in Rajouri Garden bypoll will impact its prospects in MCD elections. Kejriwal has promised that he will abolish residential house tax and waiving arrears if voted to power in MCD.
A tough fight will be seen in Rajouri Garden ward where the BJP will try to retain the seat, while the AAP and Congress would try to regain their lost ground. Congress seems confident after its unexpected performance in Rajouri Garden bypoll where it relegated the AAP to a distant third. The MCD election results will be declared on April 26.
