Meerut, May 18: Clashes broke out on Wednesday night at Meerut’s Shastri Nagar area after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Hindu groups reportedly objected to Muslims offering Namaz. after the moon marking holy month of Ramzan was sighted, at a tomb. Following the incident, a heavy security was deployed in the area. Two persons were reportedly injured in the stone-pelting from both sides. As per reports, many people gathered at the tomb to offer prayers on Wednesday soon after the crescent moon was sighted however, they were interrupted by the members of Hindu outfits. Sources close to the BJP have reportedly claimed that the function, held close to the gole mandir in Sector-3, was a first and they did not want a “new tradition” to begin. The claim, is however, being denied by the Muslim group. They had offered Namaz there often, they asserted. The police informed that no arrests have been made in this connection yet.

In a similir incident, a group of youths disrupted Namaz at multiple places in Gurugram (Gurgaon) in Haryana recently. The row erupted when members of the Sanyukt Hindu Sangharsh Samiti had raised objection against the offering of Namaz in open saying prayers should be offered only in mosques. On the other hand, Muslim groups said that there are not enough mosques available in the city. In the wake of the protest, Police personnel and companies of Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the region.
