Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Anita Jain has won the crucial MCD by-election from the Shalimar Bagh B ward. She defeated AAP candidate Babita Rana Ahlawat by a margin of 10,101 votes. The Shalimar Bagh B ward recorded a voter turnout of 37.53 per cent. Ward number 56, which is reserved for women, is considered an important seat for the BJP. It was earlier represented by Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who served as the councillor here before winning the Assembly election and becoming the CM.
According to reports, BJP candidate Anita Jain holds a Bachelor’s degree in Commerce. Her election affidavit shows that she has movable assets worth Rs. 58,90,173 and Rs. 95,000 in cash.
In the by-election, Anita Jain defeated Congress candidate Sarita Kumari as well as Independent candidates Bindu and Sushila, helping the BJP regain the seat once held by Rekha Gupta. Last month, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta even led a roadshow to support Jain as candidates from other parties filed their nominations.
Counting of votes for the bypolls in all 12 MCD wards began at 8 am on Wednesday (December 3). The election was viewed as an important contest for the BJP, AAP and the Congress.
The ruling BJP has won seven seats, while the AAP managed three, Congress one and the All India Forward Bloc one. Of the 12 wards where voting was held on November 30, nine were earlier held by the BJP and the remaining by AAP.
