Bhubaneswar: The Meteorological Centre on Sunday issued a thunderstorm warning for five districts of Odisha, stated a report. The districts namely Koraput, Gajapati, Rayagada, Ganjam, Nowrangpur and Kalahandi will experience moderate thunderstorm and lightning between 2 PM and 5 PM. Light rainfall and gusty wind at a speed of 40 kmph are also likely in one or two areas of these districts. Such weather conditions are likely to prevail.

The warning comes days after the ‘extremely severe’ cyclone Fani made its landfall near Puri on May 3 affecting over 1.5 crore people in 14 districts and destroying all power infrastructure and telecommunication.

A situation report released by the special relief commissioner’s office said at least 41 people had died and 5.08 lakh houses were damaged. Casualty to over 34.56 lakh livestock was also reported.

The Home Ministry had claimed that the power situation in eight of the nine cyclone-hit districts of Odisha had improved. Odisha’s Information and Public Relations Secretary Sanjay Singh said, “There has been massive damage to power infrastructure in the state particularly in the districts of Puri, Khurda, Cuttack and Kendrapada. On a war footing, we are working for the restoration of power infrastructure.”
