Mumbai, Sept 30: The unprecedented influx of migrants in the city is the reason behind the infrastructural collapse, claims Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray. He said that incidents of stampede, akin to which occurred near Elphinstone station on Friday, will continue till steps are not taken to check the entry of migrants.

“There has been a collapse of infrastructure facilities due to the migrant influx from other regions,” he said on Saturday.

Thackeray’s MNS was found upon the core agenda of regulating the influx of migrants in Mumbai and other cities of Maharashtra. His party had claimed that son of the soil, or the “Marathi Manoos”, were being deprived of their rights due to the arrival of migrants from other regions, particularly the North India.

Apart from putting the onus of migrants, Thackeray also blamed the government for the incident, claiming that issues being faced by the common man are being neglected.

MNS, he said, would not allow a brick to be laid for Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project, till the infrastructure of city’s local rail network is not upgraded.

“Why do we need terrorists or enemies like Pakistan? It seems our own Railway is enough to kill people,” he added.

Thackeray further accused Congress and BJP of “playing politics” over passenger safety. “Both of them raise the issues of passengers when they are in Opposition. After coming to power, neither of them do what they preached,” he said.

Taking a potshot at the BJP MP Kirit Somaiya, Thackeray added, “This man used to run from one station to another measuring the height of platform. But after BJP came to power, he is nowhere to be seen near the trains.”

In the stampede which occurred yesterday, 23 people lost their lives and nearly 40 were injured. The Railways announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh for kin of deceased, whereas, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis announced additional compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased’s family.
