New Delhi, May 1: Controversial UP BJP MLA Surendra Singh has blamed smartphones for the reason behind the rise in sexual assault on women and children. Surendra Singh, a BJP MLA from Bairia in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh said that, minors should avoid walking freely and using mobile phones to stop rape incidents.
“It is not good for minors to walk freely. They should not use mobile phones. Due to their own activities, incidents like rape happen with them. (Naabaalig ladakiyon ka khuleaam ghoomana theek nahin hai. Ladakiyon ko mobile phone ka istemaal nahin karana chaahiyee. Unke svachhand ghoomane aur mobile ka istemaal karane kee vajah se hee unke saath rape jaise ghatanaen hotee hain),” Singh believes.
However, this is not the first time the BJP MLA has courted controversy with his remarks. Singh had earlier spoken out on Unnao rape case, claiming that nobody would rape a mother of three children. He had alleged that the survivor had earlier filed a similar complaint of rape against someone else, questioning the veracity of the survivor’s version.
The Unnao rape case has made headlines for days on end now. After the PMO intervened, BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was arrested and inquiry is on. The survivor had tried to set herself ablaze at Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence in protest against the government’s apathy towards her. Then, her father died in police custody and the family alleged he died after he was beaten mercilessly.
