New Delhi: Soon after PM Narendra Modi announced successful accomplishment of ‘Mission Shakti’, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday questioned the timing of the announcement and took a sharp swipe at the Prime Minister on Twitter.

“Well done DRDO, extremely proud of your work. I would also like to wish the PM a very happy World Theatre Day,” tweeted the Congress president.

Besides, Trinamool supremo and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee also attacked PM Modi after the announcement and accused him of reaping political benefits at the time of election. “Today’s announcement is yet another limitless drama and publicity mongering by Modi desperately trying to reap political benefits at the time of election. This is a gross violation of Model Code of Conduct,” Mamata said.

She also raised question on the timing of the announcement and said that Trinamool will lodge a complaint with the Election Commission over the same. “There is no great urgency in conducting and announcing the mission now by a government past its expiry date. It seems a desperate oxygen to save the imminent sinking of the BJP boat. We are lodging a complaint with the Election Commission.

However, she hailed DRDO and Indian scientists for the achievement saying,”India’s Mission Programme is world-class for many many years. We are always proud of our scientists, @DRDO_India , other research and space organisations.”

She added,”Research, space management and development are a continuous process over the years. Modi, as usual, likes to take the credit for everything. Credit to those who really deserve it, our scientists & researchers.”

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also hit out at PM Modi accused him of trying to divert attention from other issues. “Today Narendra Modi got himself an hour of free TV and divert nation’s attention away from issues on ground — Unemployment, Rural Crisis and Women Security — by pointing at the sky. Congratulations DRDO and ISRO this success belongs to you. Thank you for making India safer,” Akhilesh Yadav tweeted.

Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and National Conference leader Omar Abdullah also targeted the government after the announcement stating, “Mountains and molehills spring to mind!”

Earlier in the day, PM Modi announced that India had demonstrated anti-satellite missile capability by shooting down a live satellite. Mission Shakti, led by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), was aimed at strengthening India’s overall security, he said.

“In the journey of every nation there are moments that bring utmost pride and have a historic impact on generations to come. One such moment is today,” he said in an unprecedented broadcast to the nation on television, radio and social media. His address came as campaigning intensifies ahead of Lok Sabha elections starting April 11.
